Product Wars: LUSH Veganese vs LUSH American Cream

Product wars: LUSH Veganese vs LUSH American Cream

Product Wars is going to be a new series where I pit two similar products against each other to see what worked best for me. A bit of an English essay style “compare and contrast”.

For the first instalment of Product Wars, I’m comparing two LUSH conditioners to each other: Veganese and American Cream.

Performance

LUSH say that both of these conditioners are lightweight, and I do agree with that. Neither of them feel like super thick conditioners, but Veganese has a thinner consistency, and a little goes a long way. They both apply easily and neither of them make your hair feel greasy or weighed down.

Both conditioners do a brilliant job of making your hair feel silky smooth, so much so that I couldn’t choose which one is better.

Scent

American Cream is supposed to smell of strawberry milkshake, but I’m not really picking up on a strawberry scent. To me, it smells more like vanilla milkshake. The scent seems to last a long time as well, my hair smells nice the day after washing, which isn’t something I’ve experienced with a conditioner before.

The scent of Veganese is harder to describe though. It just smells fresh to me.

Price

There’s no denying that LUSH conditioners aren’t cheap. A 100g bottle costs £4.50, a 250g bottle is £8.95, and the 500g bottle is £14.25. Not super cheap, but I guess it depends on how often you need to wash your hair.

I acquired my 250g bottles of both about 4 – 5 months ago, and I’ve been swapping between both and I’ve got about a quarter left in each. So for me, they do last a while and I feel they’re worth it considering how nice they make my hair feel.

The verdict

Well I suppose this is a slightly disappointing outcome for the first Product Wars, because both of them perform exactly the same. For me, Veganese has the edge though because it is vegan, while American Cream isn’t.

Have you tried either of these conditioners?

  • Love the idea of product wars! I have intense Star Wars music playing in my head as I read this. I’ve been wanting to try the Veganese conditioner for a while but have to admit the price does put me off a little, it just seems so expensive for conditioner but I may just have to bite the bullet and give it a go. xx

    • Haha yes! Imagine the Star Wars theme tune playing and someone saying ‘PRODUCT WAAAARS’ like the announcer of the X Factor.

Yeah, it is pricey, but it’s a nice treat 🙂

  • Is it worth buying one of these conditioners just for a weekly condition away from your bog standard conditioner? I use ACV to do my hair and perhaps something with organic, healthy ingredients like this would be good just once a week – then it would take away the cost a bit?

    • Sorry for the delayed reply Holly. Yeah, I think it’s a good weekly conditioner. I tried ACV and really struggled with it, I couldn’t get through the super greasy phase!

      • I haven’t found my hair is getting greasy (but I am still using shampoo at the moment), but it is working a treat – my hair feels much stronger. It does make it quite flyaway though. Starting on the baking soda instead of shampoo this week – I am sure it could be bad :/

        • I feel for you! I think it’s supposed to be greasy for a few weeks / months 😐 and if you can get over than, it’s really good. I couldn’t get over the greasy stage, it felt everlasting.

  • Ooh this is a great new feature Rosie. Silky smooth hair sounds attainable with these, my hair always seems to be on the dry side.

    • I used to have that problem. I’ve resigned myself to the fact that I will never be one of those people who has amazing hair-commercial-style shiny, glossy hair.

  • I have been using American Cream for years and i think it fantastic so I’m a bit hesitated trying any other Lush conditioner.

    • It smells so amazing too. Whenever I use it, I do find myself sniffing my hair, which probably looks really weird but hey.

I haven’t tried any of LUSH’s haircare yet. I have been tempted by the shampoo bars, but like you said the range can be a bit pricey. I think I would need to smell American Cream before I tried it though 🙂

    • The shampoo bars are brilliant, and great value for money. Montalbano is my favourite, it’s a really nice citrusy scent 🙂

Ooh, if you smell it you will fall in love with it, if you like vanilla milkshake.
